AP Psychology
Redesigned for 2024-25, consolidated from 9 units into 5 major units. Covers biological bases of behavior, cognition, development, learning, and mental health. Students tackle 75 MCQs + 2 FRQs (AAQ + EBQ) in 2h 10m. Ideal for Psychology, Pre-Med, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science tracks.
Before you start, understand how College Board scores.
The post-redesign AP Psychology (2024-25) features a balanced structure: MCQs (75 questions, 67% weighting) + FRQs (2 questions — AAQ (Article Analysis Question) + EBQ (Evidence-Based Question) — 33% weighting). Crucially, the two new FRQs focus on research methodology + critical analysis, rather than just rote memorization. Understanding this focus helps target your study efforts effectively.
2024 Score Distribution 5/5
According to College Board data, 21.7% of students globally achieved a score of 5 — a solid average for Social Sciences. However, since the 2024-25 redesign, many students lose points on the new FRQs (AAQ + EBQ) due to unfamiliarity with scientific research analysis. Our students achieve 5s at 1.5–2x the global rate thanks to intensive training in research methodology + critical reading.

AP Tutor Targets — Psychology (2026)
Global Average
Three competencies we help your child master.
College Board assesses AP Psychology based on 3 "Science Practices": Concept Application, Research Methods & Design, and Data Interpretation. Post-redesign, research methods hold significant weight. Our roadmap ensures students excel in all three.
Concept Application
One of the 6 core competencies evaluated throughout the course by the College Board.
Research Analysis
Critical evaluation of research designs and methodologies as per standard rubric.
Data Interpretation
Analyzing behavioral data and statistical significance in psychological studies.
Scientific Reasoning
Constructing explanations and making predictions based on scientific theories.
Academic Reading
Synthesizing information from psychological texts and research journals.
Effective Communication
Clearly articulating arguments and findings in free-response writing.
Sample Question — Article Analysis Question (AAQ).
This is FRQ Question 1 in the redesigned AP Psychology exam. Students must read a research abstract and analyze methodology, validity, and concept application.
Context: Read the following hypothetical research abstract.
Method: 200 11th-grade students from 3 schools were randomly assigned into 2 groups. Group A (n=100) slept 8 hours/night for 2 weeks. Group B (n=100) slept 5 hours/night for the same period. Afterward, both groups performed a memory test involving 50 English vocabulary words learned in 30 minutes.
Results: Group A remembered an average of 38/50 words (SD = 4.2). Group B remembered an average of 27/50 words (SD = 5.1). The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001).
Answer all 5 parts below:
- Identify research method: Is this an experimental, correlational, or observational study? Explain (1 point).
- Variables: Identify the Independent Variable (IV) and Dependent Variable (DV) (2 points).
- Operational definition: Describe how the study defines "memory" in a measurable way (1 point).
- Apply psychological concept: Use memory consolidation theory to explain the results (2 points).
- Limitations: State one limitation of the study and suggest a fix (1 point).
Part A — 1 pt: This is an experimental study because there is (1) random assignment, (2) manipulation of an IV (sleep hours), and (3) measurement of a DV under controlled conditions.
Part B — 2 pts: IV = number of sleep hours. DV = number of words remembered.
Part C — 1 pt: Memory is operationalized as the "number of correct vocabulary words recalled on a 50-word test after a 30-minute learning period."
Part D — 2 pts: Memory consolidation theory posits that sleep (especially REM) is when the brain transfers info from short-term memory (hippocampus) to long-term memory (neocortex). Group A had enough REM cycles to consolidate; Group B did not.
Part E — 1 pt: Limitation: poor generalizability — sample limited to 11th graders in one city (sampling bias). Fix: expand sample to diverse ages and locations.
