AP Research
A unique AP course — no traditional exam. It is Part 2 of the AP Capstone Diploma (following AP Seminar). Your child will complete a year-long independent research project: Academic Paper (4,000-5,000 words) + Presentation & Oral Defense (15-20 minutes). A massive profile boost for Honors Colleges, top Liberal Arts schools, and Research/PhD tracks.
Before you start, understand how College Board scores.
AP Research does not have a traditional exam. Instead, students must submit 2 performance tasks: (1) An Academic Paper of 4,000-5,000 words via the AP Digital Portfolio (75% of score); (2) A Presentation & Oral Defense of 15-20 minutes before a panel (25% of score). This is the only AP course requiring genuine primary research.
2024 Score Distribution 5/5
According to College Board data, 14.3% of students worldwide achieved a score of 5 in AP Research — this course is unique as it requires a year-long research commitment. Most students lose points in Establishing Argument (failure to present an original claim) and Apply Conventions (incorrect citations). Our students achieve a score of 5 at a rate 1.5-2x higher by receiving constant mentorship from topic selection to defense.

Sample Topic — Academic Paper.
AP Research does not have a traditional exam. Students must complete a year-long independent research project resulting in a 4,000-5,000 word Academic Paper + a 15-20 minute Presentation & Oral Defense.
Real student topic example: "The Impact of TikTok Usage on Attention Span Among Vietnamese High Schoolers (Grades 10-12): A Mixed-Methods Quantitative and Qualitative Study."
Standard Academic Paper Structure (5 Main Sections):
- Introduction (~600 words): Research context, importance, literature gap, and a clear research question.
- Literature Review (~1,000 words): Synthesis of 8-12 high-quality academic sources identifying the gap your study fills.
- Method (~800 words): Detailed methodology description (e.g., survey n=200 + focus group n=15), justification, IRB approval, and limitations.
- Results (~1,000 words): Presentation of collected data using tables/charts and statistical analysis (correlation, ANOVA, etc.).
- Discussion & Conclusion (~800 words): Interpreting results, comparing to existing literature, implications, and future research directions.
College Board Scoring Rubric (5 categories, 5 pts each, total 25):
- 1. Understand & Analyze Context: Deep understanding of the literature gap.
- 2. Understand & Analyze Argument: Analysis of arguments within sources.
- 3. Evaluate Multiple Perspectives: Considering varied viewpoints.
- 4. Establish Argument: Presenting an original argument supported by evidence.
- 5. Apply Conventions: Standard citations (APA/MLA) and academic writing style.
Year-long Academic Paper Timeline with AP Tutor:
• Aug-Sept — Topic Selection: Brainstorm ideas, narrow down, and formulate a SMART research question.
• Oct-Nov — Literature Review: Find 15-20 academic sources, annotate, and write LR draft 1.
• Dec-Jan — Methodology & Data Collection: Design method, get IRB approval, and collect primary data.
• Feb-Mar — Analysis & Writing: Analyze data, write Results & Discussion, draft the full paper.
• April — Revision & Defense Prep: Revision cycles with the tutor, prepare slides, and practice oral defense.
• April 30 — Deadline for Paper submission via AP Digital Portfolio.
→ Pro-tip: For AP Research, choose a topic you are truly passionate about. It doesn't need to be "grand"—it needs to be feasible, data-accessible, and fill a specific literature gap.
7 Research Tutors — rigorously vetted.
Every tutor must have a genuine research background (Master's/PhD in Liberal Arts or Sciences) and manuscript guidance experience. For AP Research, the tutor is more than a teacher; they are a research mentor companioning the student for the full year.
