Sample Question — Análisis literario.
This is a typical FRQ Short Analysis from AP Spanish Literature — Section II. Students analyze an excerpt from a required work, identify literary devices, and connect it to its historical-cultural context.
Lea el siguiente fragmento del poema "Romance sonámbulo" de Federico García Lorca:
"Verde que te quiero verde.
Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre la mar
y el caballo en la montaña.
Con la sombra en la cintura
ella sueña en su baranda,
verde carne, pelo verde,
con ojos de fría plata."
Answer all 3 parts in a single essay (~250-300 words in Spanish):
- Identify 2 literary devices prominent in the excerpt (e.g., anaphora, metaphor, symbolism) (2 points).
- Analyze the meaning of the color green (verde) — its symbolism in Lorca's poetic context (2 points).
- Relate to historical context: The work belongs to the Generación del 27 — connect the excerpt to this movement (1 point).
Part A — 2 pts: Two prominent devices:
• Anáfora (anaphora): "Verde que te quiero verde" — creates rhythm and a dream-like trance.
• Metáfora visual / sinestesia: "verde carne, pelo verde" — combines senses to create surreal imagery.
Part B — 2 pts: The color verde in Lorca's poetry is multi-layered:
• On one hand, it represents life and nature.
• On the other, it acts as a death omen, representing existential unease (verde fatídico), reinforced by the "eyes of cold silver" imagery.
Part C — 1 pt: Generación del 27 merged European vanguardism (surrealism) with Spanish folk traditions (the romance form). This poem is the perfect example: a traditional ballad structure carrying surrealist content.
→ Pro-tip: For the Spanish Lit Short Analysis, always structure your essay in 3 paragraphs following the prompt order. Most students lose points by being too vague about historical context. Mastery of the 38 authors and their specific periods is non-negotiable.
