Guide to Choosing AP Subjects

This is one of the most common questions we receive. Here is a framework to help you select an optimal combo of 4-6 AP subjects.

Step 1 · Define Your Study Abroad Goals

If targeting STEM fields (CS, Engineering, Pre-Med): prioritize Calculus BC + Physics C + Chemistry + CS A. If targeting Humanities/Social Science: prioritize US History + English Lang + Psychology + Human Geography. If undecided: choose 2 STEM + 2 Humanities to signal versatility.

Step 2 · Maximize AP Credits

Every US university has its own credit policy. For example: MIT only accepts 5s, Stanford accepts 4-5 depending on the subject, while many state schools accept 3+. Check College Board's BigFuture to verify specific school policies.

Step 3 · Balance Your Workload

Rule of thumb: Maximum of 4 AP subjects per year if taken alongside school curricula (IB, A-Level, etc.). If preparing full-time, you can aim for 5-6. Do not sacrifice your school GPA for APs — admissions committees look at both.

AP Exam Tips from Specialist Tutors

i.

MCQ: Eliminate first, don't guess blind

AP MCQs haven't penalized for wrong answers since 2011. Always answer every question. Instead of guessing randomly, eliminate 2 obviously wrong options first — your success rate jumps from 25% to 50%.

ii.

FRQ: Show your work, always

Graders award partial credit for steps. Clearly write your setup, formulas, units, and conclusions — even if the final numerical answer is wrong, you can still receive 60-70% of the points.

iii.

Time management: 1.5 min per MCQ

Most AP exams allow ~1.2-1.5 minutes per MCQ. If you are stuck for more than 2 minutes, mark it and move on. An easy question is worth the same points as a hard one.

iv.

Sleep Cramming the night before

Research shows that getting 8 hours of sleep before an exam increases cognitive performance by 15-20% compared to staying up late. A 3-hour AP exam requires mental stamina; you cannot "cram" your way through it.
