[Image: Las Meninas — Diego Velázquez, 1656, oil on canvas, Museo del Prado, Madrid]
Answer all three parts below about the work Las Meninas:
- Describe two (2) visual features of the work (e.g., composition, lighting, perspective, use of space).
- Explain one (1) way Velázquez challenged the royal portrait tradition of the Baroque period.
- Analyze one (1) way this work influenced later modern art (e.g., Picasso, Manet, or 20th-century artists).
Part A (2 points): Need 2 specific visual features: e.g., (1) Velázquez stands at the far left holding a brush, inserting himself into the painting; (2) the mirror at the center back reflects King Philip IV and Queen Mariana — making the viewer the "painted subject".
Part B (2 points): Velázquez breaks Baroque conventions: the focal point is not royalty but Princess Margarita and her retinue (meninas, dwarfs, dog) — turning a royal portrait into a daily-life scene. He also places himself on equal footing with royalty in the painting.
Part C (1 point): Need to link to a specific later artist: Picasso painted 58 versions analyzing Las Meninas (1957); Manet learned from Velázquez's handling of light to develop Impressionism.
→ Our team's tip: Each part needs visual evidence (point to something specific in the painting) or contextual evidence (names, years, schools) — vague answers like "beautiful" or "impressive" don't earn points.
