01 — Exam Structure

Before you start, understand how the College Board scores.

AP Latin has a distinctive structure: Section I (50 MCQ — 50% of the score) tests reading comprehension on both syllabus passages (Caesar/Vergil) and sight passages (unseen); Section II (5 FRQ — 50% of the score) includes 2 Translations, 1 Short Analysis, 1 Long Analysis, and 1 Comparative Essay. Understanding the structure helps your child allocate study time to the right focus areas.

Score 5/5 distribution in 2024

According to College Board data, only 9.2% of students worldwide achieve a 5 on AP Latin — a very low rate due to the requirements for word-by-word accurate translation and classical literary analysis. Our students reach a score-5 rate 1.5–2 times higher than this thanks to thorough syllabus reading practice and rubric-aligned drills on all 5 FRQ types.

At top US universities — a score of 5 on AP Latin is recognized for up to 3-8 credits. Especially valuable for Classics, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics applications — and a "differentiator" for Pre-Law / Pre-Med profiles (very few Vietnamese students take AP Latin).

05 — Try It Yourself

Sample question — Translation FRQ.

This is an AP Latin Translation FRQ — worth 15% of the total score. Students must translate a short passage (3-4 sentences) from Caesar or Vergil into English with word-by-word accuracy according to the rubric.

Question Type FRQ · Translation

Max Score 9 points
Recommended Time 15 minutes

Section II · FRQ 1 · Translation · 15 min Latin

Prompt: Translate the following passage (excerpt from Caesar's De Bello Gallico Book I) into English — literal translation, accurate to each word.

"Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur."

9-point College Board scoring rubric:

  • A. Vocabulary (3 points): Correctly translate the meaning of key words (Gallia, divisa, partes, incolunt, lingua, appellantur).
  • B. Grammar (3 points): Correct number (singular/plural), tense, mood, and case (especially: ablative "lingua", relative "quarum", passive "appellantur").
  • C. Idiom & Word Order (2 points): Understand Latin idioms (e.g., "ipsorum lingua" = "in their own language"), preserve meaning when rearranging word order.
  • D. English Style (1 point): Natural English sentence, not awkwardly word-by-word.

Sample translation receiving the maximum score:

"All Gaul is divided into three parts, of which the Belgians inhabit one, the Aquitanians another, the third [is inhabited by those] who in their own language are called Celts, [but] in ours, Gauls."

Breakdown of each part:

"Gallia est omnis divisa" → "All Gaul is divided" (perfect passive — not "Gaul divides").
"in partes tres" → "into three parts" (accusative of motion — preposition "in" + accusative).
"quarum unam incolunt Belgae" → "of which the Belgians inhabit one" (relative clause; quarum = partitive genitive; Belgae = subject).
"qui ipsorum lingua... appellantur" → "who in their own language... are called" (present passive; lingua = ablative of means).

→ Our tip: for Latin translation, always identify case + verb form before translating. This is Caesar’s most iconic opening — every AP Latin student should know it by heart. This opening sentence packs many grammar challenges (passive, relative, ablative).

06 — Specialized Tutors

6 Latin tutors — carefully selected by our team.

Each of our tutors must pass an internal exam equivalent to the May exam — scoring a minimum of 90% correct. All have strong backgrounds in Classics / Latin Literature / Comparative Literature and extensive experience translating Caesar + Vergil to AP rubric standards.

To start AP Latin, students should reach a Latin II equivalent or 3-4 years of formal study (with mastery of basic noun declensions, verb conjugations, and ~1,500 vocabulary). If not yet there, we offer a supplementary Pre-AP track to build vocabulary and grammar foundations over 3-4 months before entering the official AP course.
The 2026 AP Latin exam runs 3 hours, following the College Board’s official format. It includes 50 MCQ (multiple choice) questions and 5 FRQ (free response) questions. AP Latin 2026 is still in the traditional paper-based format. Our team prepares your child for the answer-sheet workflow and especially trains handwritten 5-FRQ practice within 2 hours — including 2 Translations (15 minutes each), 1 Short Analysis, 1 Long Analysis, and 1 Comparative Essay.
It depends on the school, but typically a score of 5 in Latin = 3-4 credits at top 100 US universities (equivalent to $4,000-$15,000 in tuition savings). Top schools like Harvard, Princeton, and MIT generally accept only a 5 and sometimes don’t grant credits — but still use the score for placement into advanced classes.
Our team uses an integrated platform with interactive whiteboard + screen-share, with every session recorded for review. Especially with AP Latin — tutors can annotate directly on Caesar/Vergil text, parse Latin sentences word by word, and comment on translations line by line per the AP rubric. Students in Hanoi and HCMC can request offline classes at our office when a local tutor is available.
Yes, possible if the student has completed Pre-AP or corresponding foundational subjects with grades of A. Taking the AP early has benefits: it shows above-grade-level achievement on applications and leaves 2 more years to take additional AP subjects. However, most students choose to take Latin in grade 11 or 12 for a stronger foundation.
Yes. Within the first 4 sessions, you or your child can request a free tutor change if the style isn’t the right fit. Our team will transfer all progress and graded translations/essays to the new tutor. After the 4th session, changing tutors carries a small re-assessment fee.
