AP Latin
Read and translate Caesar's De Bello Gallico (Gallic War) and Vergil's Aeneid. Niche subject for students passionate about classics, literature, and linguistics. Especially valuable for Pre-Law (Latin maxims), Pre-Med (medical Latin), Linguistics, and Classics profiles.
Before you start, understand how the College Board scores.
AP Latin has a distinctive structure: Section I (50 MCQ — 50% of the score) tests reading comprehension on both syllabus passages (Caesar/Vergil) and sight passages (unseen); Section II (5 FRQ — 50% of the score) includes 2 Translations, 1 Short Analysis, 1 Long Analysis, and 1 Comparative Essay. Understanding the structure helps your child allocate study time to the right focus areas.
Score 5/5 distribution in 2024
According to College Board data, only 9.2% of students worldwide achieve a 5 on AP Latin — a very low rate due to the requirements for word-by-word accurate translation and classical literary analysis. Our students reach a score-5 rate 1.5–2 times higher than this thanks to thorough syllabus reading practice and rubric-aligned drills on all 5 FRQ types.

Sample question — Translation FRQ.
This is an AP Latin Translation FRQ — worth 15% of the total score. Students must translate a short passage (3-4 sentences) from Caesar or Vergil into English with word-by-word accuracy according to the rubric.
Prompt: Translate the following passage (excerpt from Caesar's De Bello Gallico Book I) into English — literal translation, accurate to each word.
9-point College Board scoring rubric:
- A. Vocabulary (3 points): Correctly translate the meaning of key words (Gallia, divisa, partes, incolunt, lingua, appellantur).
- B. Grammar (3 points): Correct number (singular/plural), tense, mood, and case (especially: ablative "lingua", relative "quarum", passive "appellantur").
- C. Idiom & Word Order (2 points): Understand Latin idioms (e.g., "ipsorum lingua" = "in their own language"), preserve meaning when rearranging word order.
- D. English Style (1 point): Natural English sentence, not awkwardly word-by-word.
Sample translation receiving the maximum score:
"All Gaul is divided into three parts, of which the Belgians inhabit one, the Aquitanians another, the third [is inhabited by those] who in their own language are called Celts, [but] in ours, Gauls."
Breakdown of each part:
• "Gallia est omnis divisa" → "All Gaul is divided" (perfect passive — not "Gaul divides").
• "in partes tres" → "into three parts" (accusative of motion — preposition "in" + accusative).
• "quarum unam incolunt Belgae" → "of which the Belgians inhabit one" (relative clause; quarum = partitive genitive; Belgae = subject).
• "qui ipsorum lingua... appellantur" → "who in their own language... are called" (present passive; lingua = ablative of means).
→ Our tip: for Latin translation, always identify case + verb form before translating. This is Caesar’s most iconic opening — every AP Latin student should know it by heart. This opening sentence packs many grammar challenges (passive, relative, ablative).
