01 — Exam structure

Before you start, understand how the College Board scores.

AP Environmental Science (APES) has a balanced structure between MCQ (80 questions, 60% of score) and 3 FRQs (Design Investigation, Analyze Environmental Problem, Solve Environmental Problem — 40% of score). Understanding the structure helps your child allocate study time to the right priorities.

2024 distribution of score 5/5

According to College Board data, only 9.8% of students worldwide score a 5 in AP Environmental Science — a subject famous for being "deceptively hard." Most students lose points on FRQs because they don't show numerical work or answer in generalities. Our students achieve a score-5 rate 1.5-2x higher than this thanks to drilling all 3 FRQ types to rubric standard.

04 — Skills you'll gain

Seven skills our team helps your child master.

The College Board scores based on 7 "Science Practices" throughout the course and exam — from Concept Explanation to Mathematical Routines (especially important since FRQs often include calculations). Our program ensures students master all 7.

Explain environmental concepts

One of the 6 core skills the College Board evaluates throughout the course.

Analyze charts & real-world data

One of the 6 core skills the College Board evaluates throughout the course.

Analyze scientific research

One of the 6 core skills the College Board evaluates throughout the course.

Reason about environmental issues

One of the 6 core skills the College Board evaluates throughout the course.

Use environmental calculations

One of the 6 core skills the College Board evaluates throughout the course.

Propose solutions

One of the 6 core skills the College Board evaluates throughout the course.

05 — Try a question

Sample question — Analyze Environmental Problem.

This is FRQ Question 2 of AP Environmental Science. Students read a real-world scenario, analyze the environmental problem, and propose solutions based on data and scientific concepts.

Question type FRQ · Data Analysis
Section II — FRQ 2
Max score 10 points
Recommended time 22 min
Take a diagnostic test
Section II · FRQ 2 · 22 min FRQ

Scenario: A coastal city in Vietnam is facing sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion. Average sea level has risen 3.4 mm/year over the past 30 years. The share of agricultural land affected by salinization has grown from 5% (1995) to 18% (2025).

Answer all 4 parts below:

  1. Describe two main causes of sea-level rise (2 pts).
  2. Calculate the total sea-level rise over the past 30 years (in cm). Show your work (1 pt).
  3. Explain two specific ecological impacts of saltwater intrusion on the estuarine ecosystem (3 pts).
  4. Propose and evaluate two mitigation solutions — must include both pros and cons of each solution (4 pts).

Part (a) — 2 pts: 1 pt per cause. Examples: (1) Thermal expansion — warming oceans expand due to climate change; (2) Glacier & ice sheet melting — ice melt from Greenland and Antarctica adds water to the ocean.

Part (b) — 1 pt: 3.4 mm/year × 30 years = 102 mm = 10.2 cm. Must clearly show the calculation.

Part (c) — 3 pts: 1.5 pts per impact. Examples: (1) Loss of mangroves due to excessive salinity → reduced habitat for fish and birds; (2) Decline in species diversity since only salt-tolerant species (halophytes) survive → the ecosystem becomes monotonous and less resilient.

Part (d) — 4 pts: 2 pts per solution (1 for proposal, 1 for pros/cons evaluation). Examples: (1) Build sea walls — Pro: protects agricultural land in the short term; Con: expensive, disrupts natural water flow; (2) Replant mangrove forests — Pro: cost-effective, naturally absorbs wave energy; Con: takes a long time to mature.

→ Our team's tip: for APES FRQs, always show both numerical work (part b) and specific examples in explanations — avoid generic answers like "pollution increases."

On average 6-10 months (3 sessions/week, 90 min each) for students with a strong foundation. Our program covers 9 main CED units plus 4-6 mock exams before the May test. Students with a weaker foundation need an additional 2-3 months to build prerequisites before entering AP content.
The 2026 AP Environmental Science exam runs 2 hours 40 minutes in the College Board's official format. It includes 80 MCQ (multiple choice) and 3 FRQ (free response) questions. AP Environmental Science 2026 remains the traditional paper format. Our team prepares your child for the answer-sheet process, calculator use (allowed), and time management between Section I (80 MCQ in 90 min) and Section II (3 FRQ in 70 min).
It varies by school, but typically a 5 in Environmental Science = 3-4 credits at top 100 U.S. universities (saving roughly $4,000-$15,000 in tuition). Top schools like Harvard, Princeton, MIT often only accept a 5 and sometimes don't grant credit — but still use it for advanced placement into higher courses.
Our team uses a platform integrating an interactive whiteboard + screen-share, with every lesson recorded for review. Especially for Env Science — tutors can share data from NASA Climate, ecosystem charts, and GIS maps live in lessons. Students in Hanoi and HCMC can request in-person lessons at our offices when local tutors are available.
It's possible, if students have completed Pre-AP or equivalent foundation courses with A grades. Taking the AP early has upsides: it shows advanced standing on applications and leaves 2 more years for additional AP subjects. However, most students take Environmental Science in grade 11 or 12 for a more solid foundation.
Yes. Within the first 4 lessons, you or your child can request a tutor change free of charge if the teaching style doesn't fit. Our team will transfer all learning progress and assessments to the new tutor. After the 4th lesson, swapping incurs a small re-assessment fee.
